Post Theatre - Sullivan's Island, SC

Post Theatre - 1454 Middle Street - Sullivan's Island, SC

The Post Theatre was originally a military theatre for Fort Moultrie.
It was later called the Island Theatre and served the island's residential community.

From Suzannah Smith Miles

I do recall well the movie house on Sullivan's Island. It was originally the Post Theater for Fort Moultrie and, in my lifetime, active in the fifties and the early sixties as the Island Theater. It was pretty much your typical small movie house. You purchased the ticket from the window out side... once in, you entered a concession area (where popcorn and candy was sold at exorbitant prices) and two entrances from either side led into the theater, which was small but had, to the best of my recollection, a balcony.

It seems to me I was seated in the balcony when, scared out of my wits, I screamed out loud to a scene from "House on Haunted Hill." Maybe it was "Pit and the Pendulum." I remember seeing both there, as well as a very guilty viewing of "Peyton Place" which I had been expressly forbidden to see. The girl's bathroom, which had a window to the outside, provided a most suitable entrance if one did not have enough money to buy a ticket. I don't think they were open every night, probably only on weekends, and I'm not sure they were open during the wintertime. Sullivan's Island back then pretty much closed up in the winter.
